The Problem With My Resting Bitch Face

I have a problem: I look angry all the time. Resting Bitch Face (RBF) really affects your social life when you have two or three people ask you what you're upset or angry about every hour.

When I first met my mum's boyfriend, apparently he asked her if he had done something to upset me. I wasn't even angry. I was just chilling.

So, I would like to take this opportunity to attempt to explain why I think I ended up with such an angry face, and to apologise to anyone who finds my facial expressions offensive.

I was born with a mild case of cleft palate, and fortunately, I was operated on as a baby. The result of this operation was that I ended up with a protruding lower jaw. This made me look constantly pissed off. I had only one natural facial expression: pouting my lower lip like a kid that wasn't given candy.

Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I spent many hours in a dentist chair, assessed and examined by the teams and observed by armies of dentistry students. When I was 17, I was finally given the go-ahead to have an operation to eliminate this condition, known as Maxillary Hypoplasia. The reason why I could only have this operation well into my teens was because the teams of dentists and orthodontists I had (yes, teams) agreed that they should wait until my jaw bone structure was fully developed.

I don't know about anything that happened to me in the operation theatre, because they knocked me out and the medical lingo used when they explained what was going to happen to me was too complicated for me to comprehend. All I knew was, I wasn't going to look angry anymore! After the operation, I spent two weeks at the hospital recovering.

When I went home, the first thing I did was look in the mirror. My angry lower jaw pout was gone... And it was replaced by a fuller pout. Arguably angrier than the previous pout. I went from Cameron Diaz to Jay-Z. So now, instead of only pouting with my lower lip, my whole mouth pouts. And pouts and pouts.
